POPULAR HEADMASTER

MR J. W. T. JONES FAREWELLED. TRIBUTES TO SPLENDID SERVICE. Tributes to the splendid service rendered by the headmaster of the Lansdowne School, Mr J. W. T. Jones, to the school and the community were paid by the Mayor’ of Masterton, Mr T. Jordan, and other speakers at a farewell gathering tendered to Mr Jones yesterday afternoon. The large and representative gathering indicated the popularity and high esteem in which Mr Jones is held. Mr A. V. Faulknor, chairman of the school committee, welcomed those present. Mr Jordan said he was present as a fellow citizen of Mr Jones to thank him for the service he had rendered to Masterton. Mr Jones had been a stalwart in the Emergency Precautions Service and his work at Lansdowne had been reflected in the children. Mr Jones had set a fine example of service, said Mr Jordan, and he wished him and Mrs Jones success in the future. Mr W. R. Nicol, representing the Wellington Education Board, said the school was losing an excellent headmaster. Mr H. E. Pither said Mr Jones had a high reputation throughout the district. The high regard in which the pupils hold Mr Jones was shown when he was presented with a handsome fireside chair and a golf-bag. Mr Jones, in returning thanks, thanked the members of the school committee for the wonderful co-operation he had received from them. He said the staff and the children were like one happy family. The groundsman, Mr J. Dwyer, had given splendid service. Referring to the hospital classes, Mr Jones said Miss Nancy Allan, the former teacher ,and Mrs M. A. Rawlins, the present teacher,,were splendid workers. Mrs Jones was handed a beautiful posy. Cheers were given Mr and Mrs Jones. Opportunity was also taken to farewell. a member of the teaching staff, Miss Feist. Mr Jones said she had done splendid work and he wished her success in her new sphere. Presentations were made to Miss Feist by pupils and she was wished a successful future by the children. Miss Feist returned thanks.
