Miss E. Goble, Tararua Street, Masterton, is visiting Wellington. Mr and Mrs El. Miller Hope, Macara Street, Masterton, are visiting Dunedin. Captain H. A. Harcombe, who has been granted extended leave from the Army, has again taken up his business duties in Masterton. Mrs Norman Carswell, Masterton, and her daughters, Pam and Shirley, are spending a holiday in Tauranga with Mr and Mrs A. Carswell. Miss Joan Tandy, well known teacher of dancing, has been appointed adjudicator of the fancy dancing sections of the competitions to be held in Wellington during the school vacation. The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital yesterday of Mr Arthur Frank Gillard, at the age of 68 years. The late Mr Gillard was born in Carterton. He was twice married and is survived by a widow. The interment will be private. Sapper Frederick Athol Fryer, Gunner Frances John F. Heaven, Private Clarence David Penniall and Lance Corporal Thomas John Charles, all of Masterton, are among a party of sick and wounded members of the Second N.Z.E.F. who recently returned to New Zealand.

Sister I. C. Healey, who is on furlough from the Middle East, and her sister, Mrs Meyer, North Auckland, are the guests of Mr and Mrs W. R. Nicol, Chapel Street, Masterton. Sister Healey was one of the few sisters in the Middle East to receive the Red Cross Medal. Prior to leaving for overseas she was tutor-sister at the Masterton Hospital. Sigrid Onegin, noted operatic contralto, is reported to have died in Switzerland in June at the age of 52 years. Madame Onegin made her professional debut at Stuttgart in the title role of “Carmen,” and was at once hailed as an artist of uncommon promise. Sigrid Onegin, who was a pupil of Weiss, of Munich, married Baron Lvoff Onegin, Russian composer, who was killed fighting for Russia in the last war. At the meeting of the Wairarapa Rugby Union at Carterton last nightspecial reference was made to the valuable services Mr H. A. McPhee (hon secretary) had rendered the Union during the past four or five years, giving his services voluntarily and carrying out his duties in a capable and busi-ness-like manner. It was decided that he be the guest of honour at a complimentary social gathering to be held in connection with the next meeting of the Union.

Writing to a member of the borough staff the late custodian, Mr J. V. Dolan, mentions having received at his new place of residence. Castlepoint, a token of the South African and R.S.A. veteran forces in the form of a splendid armchair; also a letter from the donors with their signatures attached. He has also received a beautifully-bound Bible from the Masterton Girl Guides, with an accompanying letter of good wishes for the future happiness in retirement of himself and Mrs Dolan. These unexpected and cherished tokens of esteem, the writer says, should ever be reminders of the many friendships made in the course of his duty.
