ALL OFFICERS LOST

ON TORPEDOED FRENCH LINER A French liner, carrying the tricolour and the Cross of Lorraine, was recently torpedoed during an Atlantic crossing, in heavy weather. Part of the lifeboats were destroyed by the explosion caused by the torpedo, and numerous others were rendered useless through the angle taken by the sinking ship. The officers gathered round the captain, asking for his orders. “My friends,” said the French captain, “let the men leave. As for us, oui’ duty is to remain here.” Not a single officer of this ship was saved. Su'ch was the story told recently to France by a speaker broadcasting from the 8.8. C.
