FIGHTER PILOTS

NEW ZEALANDERS GAIN FRESH LAURELS. ACHIEVEMENTS IN BRITAIN. (Special P.A. Correspondent.) LONDON, August 18. Two New Zealand fighter pilots who distinguished themselves at Malta are now gaining fresh laurels in Britain. They are Pilot Officer R. B. Hesselyn, D.E.M. and Bar, Christchurch, and Flying Officer J. D. Rae, D.F.C., Auckland. Hesselyn shot down 12£ Germans over Malta. He added another to his total a few weeks ago, and yesterday shot down two more during continuous fighting over the Continent. “It was just like the old Malta days,” he said.

Rae, who shot down 6£ by the time he returned from Malta, has rejoined a New Zealand Spitfire squadron. He figured in the squadron’s recent successes, and yesterday also destroyed a Messerschmitt 109 and probably destroyed another, making his total 10 and the squadron’s 55.
