LANSDOWNE SCHOOL
HEADMASTER FAREWELLED. TRIBUTE BY COMMITTEE. Members of the Lansdowne School Committee farewelled Mr J. W. T. Jones, headmaster of the Lansdowne School, at a gathering held at the residence of Mr and Mrs C. K. Long, last night. Mr Jones has been transferred to the Featherston District High School. Those present included two ex-chairman of the Lansdowne School Committee, Messrs'll. E. Pither and J. G. McFarlane, besides other former members of the committee. Eulogistic reference was made to the ‘ excellent service rendered by Mr Jones during his term as headmaster of Lansdowne School and on behalf of those present, the chairman of the committee, Mr A. V. Faulknor, presented Mr Jones with a rug. Mesdames Long and R. Baker served a savoury supper. HOSPITAL CLASSES. PRESENTATIONS FROM CHILDREN There was a large gathering at a ward decorated with bulbs and pussywillow at the Masterton Hospital yesterday when Mr Jones was honoured by the hospital classes. The Matron, Miss H. D. Grant, referred to Mr Jones’s outstanding work and spoke of the sympathetic understanding he possessed in children’s work. In reply Mr Jones said that 410 children had passed through the classes during the four years they were in operation. He said the success of the work was due to the capability of the former teacher, Miss Allan, and the present teacher, Mrs Rawlins. Mary Ireland made a presentation of a handkerchief made by the children and Bill Ellers presented Mr Jones with a honey jar. Mr Jones thanked the children for their kindness. Sister Cooper was in charge of the programme in which items were contributed by John Nunn, Joyce Pavitt, Margaret Ireland, Anabelle Hairawiri, Selina Akura, Barry Smith, and David Smith. At the call of Bill Ellers Mr Jones was accorded musical honours. Afternoon tea was served by the nurses. Mesdames H. E. Pither and S. N. Kilgour represented the Crippled Children Society. Regret was expressed that the medical superintendent was unable to be present.
