SHUTTLE SERVICE
AIR ATTACKS ON AXIS FROM BRITAIN & AFRICA. GERMANY BETWEEN JAWS. LONDON, August 18. Brigadier-General Frederick Anderson, commanding the Eighth American Air Force Bomber Command, said: “We have started a shuttle service across Europe, a service which the R.A.F. has already demonstrated, but which both will now carry out. The Allied air forces in Africa have now
made contact with those from Eng-
land. Germany is between their
jaws and the end of German power is only a matter of time.” Schweinfurt has a large ball and roller-bearing works. Fortresses returning from Schweinfurt report that smoke billowed up 10,000 to 20,000 feet over the target, drifting for 10 miles. Schweinfurt produces more than half Germany’s ball-bearings. Squadrons of Thunderbolts and Spitfires which supported these operations destroyed 33 enemy fighters. Thirty-six of our heavy bombers and one fighterbomber are missing.
