GREYTOWN
BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Greytown Borough Council there were present Mr A. W. Horton (Mayor). Councillors W. A. Tate, I. Blissett, H. J. Farley, F. Wood, H. C. Trotman. H. McKenna, G. F. Eagar. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors E. Balfour and A. Stuart. The Town Clerk submitted the estimates for the coming year and after a short discussion they were passed. The rate struck is the same as last year. Mr W. Jordon wrote in reply to thcletter from the council in regard to dogtax collection, that he was working long hours and had not been able to complete the work. Mr Mark Maxton wrote asking for rebate of rates on his properties that had been vacant. It was pointed out by the mayor that some of these properties were not entitled to rebate, and also that application would have to be made within 14 days after the expiration of the six months allowed under law.
Mrs Wenden, Senr. wrote that she considered she had been over charged in connection with the repairs to her chimney. The letter was received.
The secretary of the Wairarapa Hospital Board wrote asking the council to agree to the increase in the cost of the strengthening of the nurses’ home. Masterton. This was agreed to. As no tender had been received for the lease of the Town Hall, it was agreed to extend the time for one month.
The building inspector wrote that Messrs Trotman & Son had carried out building work without having obtained authority or a permit beforehand. The mayor stated that in future the regulations would have to be complied with. Authority had now been received for these works to be proceeded with. In reply to a letter sent to Mr W. Jordon by the council in respect to his fowl house near the Main Street, Mr Jordon replied that his fowls were not creating a nuisance to neighbours and if they were that was a private matter. The letter was received.
School Committee.
The monthly meeting of the Greytown District High School Committee was held last evening. There were present Messrs H. G. Carter (chairman). F. Dennes (treasurer), L. R. Huntley. R. O’Neale, Mrs Knell (secretary.) and the headmaster, Mr S. C. Shedden. The Town Clerk wrote stating that the borough foreman would attend to the uneven road surface at the corner of East and McMaster streets.
The roll numbers were reported to be: Primary 296, secondary 38. The school visitors for the month reported that the grounds and buildings were in good order.

The other big picture is the romantic drama, “The Mystery of Marie Roget,” with Maria Montez and Patrie Knowles in the chief, roles.
