FRENCH REPUBLIC
FORMATION OF COMMITTEE IN U.S.A. A group of well-known Frenchmen at present' in the United States have founded a Republican Committee, which says, in a statement of its aims:— “The Republic, in France, in order tomorrow to face its heavy task, will need reforming and strengthening in the best national interest, so that it may allow democracy to give expression to its values, first among them that of being able itself to ensure its own discipline and safeguard the rights of the individual without prejudice to the rights of the community. . . .
“It is now that should be carried out the sincere, unequivocal return to the Republic, with the loyal and integral re-establishment of Republican laws and liberties, which alone will allow the people of France to constitute a government of its own choice, based on the permanent exercise of popular sovereignty. . . . “We desire to state here that Republican government is and will remain in our country the only government posisble, the only form capable of bringing about the union of all Frenchmen. . . . Without the Republic the existence of France is henceforth impossible.” Among the signatories were Philippe
Barres. Emile Bure, and Andre Geraud (internationally known under the signature of “Pertinax,” whose articles on international politics bore weight in every Foreign Office in Europe).
