OPTIMIST CLUB
DEBATE AT WEEKLY TEA.
Thirty-six young men sat down to tea at the weekly meeting of the Masterton Optimist Club held in the Y.M.C.A. rooms last night. The president, Mr C. W. Gaze, extended a warm welcome to the visitors, Corporal T. W. B. Smith, of the Second N.Z.E.F., Messrs J. H. MacDonald, H. N. Bibby,' G. Gair, Rippon, and N. Jacobsen from the Wairarapa College, M. .Hansen and three boys from the Whatman Home.
Following the song and sheriff’s sessions a most interesting debate was held, the subject being “That Everlasting Peace is Possible.” Mr Bibby kindly acted as adjudicator. The Optimist team, Messrs E. J. Esler (leader), Colin Lyttle and Campbell Smith took the affirmative and the College team, Messrs G. Gair, Rippon and -N. Jacobsen took the negative. In awarding the decision to the College team by 244 points to 230 points, Mr Bibby gave a splendid summing up and congratulated all taking' part on the excellent performance they had given. The president thanked the College visitors for the interesting debate and on behalf of the College visitors Mr G. Gair returned thanks.'
