BOROUGH AFFAIRS

FEATHERSTON COUNCIL SUGGESTED AIR BASE AT MARTINBOROUGH. MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE FAVOURED. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Featherston Borough Council there were present the Mayor (Mr J. W. Card), Councillors S. P. Batcheler, G. A. Farrier, W. J. Boston, C. R. Skipage, B. B. Donald, C. C. Kenward, R. R. P. Hardy and T. G. Hardie. An apology for absence was received from Councillor H. W. Cundy. The treasurer reported: District Fund A/c, cr. £514 14s 8d; Cemetery A/c, cr. £lll Ils 9d; Domain A/q, cr. £44 16s 3d; Mayor’s Relief Fund A/c. cr, £74 14s 9d; Water Supply Loan A/c, cr. £47 Is 3d; Library A/c, cr. £49 2- 4d. The secretary of the Boy Scouts wrote thanking the council for a donation of £ 2 towards the Scout funds.

The Martinborough Borough Council wrote seeking support foi’ a resolution asking the member for the district to include Martinborough on the agenda paper with regard to establishing a commercial air base after the war. It was decided to support the Martinborough Council. The Wairarapa Hospital Board wrote seeking the council’s opinion in regard to its proposal to apply for a special loan of £15,000 for strengthening the nurses’ home. It was decided to leave the matter to the good judgment of the board.

The secretary of the Municipal Association wrote asking the council’s opinion as to the advisability of holding the Municipal Conference in March of next year. It was decided that the council favoured the holding of a conference.

The Featherston County Council wrote asking that when entertaining returned soldiers all the men who reside in the county contiguous to the borough should be included. It was resolved to accede to the request. It was reported that a complaint concerning the Town Hall has been attended to.

It was reported that some 60 trees had been planted in Clifford Square.

It was announced that the billiard table stored in the Methodist Hall had been sold to the Carterton Fire Brigade. It was decided to endorse the sale.
