DAV ATTACKS ON GERMAN airfields IN NORTHERN FRANCE. TOLL TAKEN OF ENEMY AIRCRAFT. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 12.50 p.m.) RUGBY, August 16. Of the six German airfields in France attacked this morning by American planes, Flying Fortresses attacked three, including Le Bourget and Abbeville,’and Marauders attacked airfields near Amiens. Visibility was excellent, and good bombing results were obtained. British, Dominion and Allied fighters supported the sweeps. Over Le Bourget, strong fighter opposition was encountered and the escort shot down 17 German planes. The bomber crews accounted for nearly twenty more and Spitfires for another two or three heavy bombers. One fighterbomber and eight fighters are missing. This evening waves of planes crossed the Straits of Dover heading for Northern France. They returned nearly one hour later.
