AIR OFFENSIVE
ALLIED DAY & NIGHT OPERATIONS ATTACKS ON SIX AIRFIELDS IN FRANCE. MANY GERMAN FIGHTERS • SHOT DOWN. LONDON, August 16. ■ Six German airfields in France were the targets of today’s big air offensive. Strong forces of Flying Fortresses, besides R.A.F. Bostons, Venturas and Typhoons took part. Visibility was excellent and good results were reported. British, Dominion and American. fighters supported and covered the bombers’ operations.
At one airfield strong fighter opposition was encountered. The escorting Thunderbolts shot down 17 German fighters and bombers accounted for about 20 more, while Spitfire squadrons shot down another two. Three heavy bombers, one fighter-bomber and eight fighters are missing. Last night’s operations included a raid by Mosquitoes on targets in Berlin, mine-laying in enemy waters and attacks on airfields and railways in France and the Low Countries. One German fighter was destroyed. Ten bombers and two fighters are missing from the night's operations, including the latest raid on Milan. Mosquito crews attacking Berlin reported that there was very intense anti-aircraft fire and that searchlights were very active.
