CARTERTON

RACING CLUB MEETING OF STEWARDS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mi- W Howard Booth presided over a meeting of stewards of the Cafterton Racing Club last night. There were also present: Messrs F. Bain, G. E. Allen. L. H. Smart. J. C. Harp. H. J. Brown, E. Matson and J. Johnson. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs W. C. Deller and F. C. Yule. The treasurer reported a debit balance of £427.Mi- H Judd, of Waipukurau, wrote resigning as a trustee to the club. The resignation was accepted with regret, reference being made to the excellent service Mr Judd had rendered the club. The New Zealand Racing Conference notified the club that Carterton had not been allotted a racing day for ISM?. The meeting expressed regret at the decision. ’ , , Mr Booth said that in view of the president's remarks in'his annual report that where a country club had temporarily lost its racing days, the executive had endeavoured to see that that club’s ordinary overhead expenses- were provided for either by associating it with some other club for one day meeting or by asking the larger or more fortunately situated clubs to assist these les» fortunate. Carterton should do something in the matter. , Mr Smart said that the conference should again be written to and a protest entered pointing out that Carterton's course was not now occupied by the military and asking for a race day. Failing a. satisfactory reply in this direction the club should ask for assistance in meeting its obligations in overhead expenses. A motion on these lines was moved by Mr Smart, seconded by MT Bali; and carried. . . It was resolved that tenders (with or without the cottage) be called for the lease ci the racecourse property for 12 months as from October. It was decided that the secretary arrange for work to be done at the cottage on the racecourse.-

MARTIN LIFE OF UNUSUAL PROMISE CUT SHORT. » Advice has been received by his father, Mr W Martin, of the Carterton District High School, that Private James Lindsay Martin, who was reported missing in June, 1942, .may now be presumed died from a battle- accident, Private Lindsay Martin was born-in Christchurch in 1915 and after completing his primary education at the Mosgiel District High School, entered Marlborough College in 1928 where he ultimately became head prefect and winner of the Pattie Cup presented annually to the best all-round scholar in the school. He took up teaching and .after attending Chrischurch and-Wel-lington Training colleges he was ultimately appointed to take charge of the school a. Tarawera, Hawke’s Bay, whence he enlisted for service overseas. He left New Zealand as a sergeant, but on being transferred at his own request to the intelligen.ee section ol the 22nd Battalion, he had to resume the rank of private. „ . , After service in Egypt and Syna, he turned to Egypt and was killed at the time of the break-through of New Zealand troops at Minquar Qaim.
