VIRGINO GAYDA
MUSSOLINI’S MOUTHPIECE. SAID TO HAVE BEEN KILLED BY MOB. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) LONDON, August 12. The British United Press correspondent in Madrid quotes a Vichy report that Signor Virginio Gayda was burned to death when a mob attacked, the premises of the “Giornale d’ltalia” on July 26. Gayda took refuge in an inner office, but the crowd piled petrolsoaked furniture outside and soon set it on fire.
Virginio Gayda became director of the “Giornale d’ltalia” in 1926, having occupied a similar position with the "Messagero” for the previous five years. He was a bombastic supporter of Mussolini and the Fascist regime throughout their reign of power. Gayda’s articles in “Giornale d’ltalia” were always regarded as officially inspired, and he came to be known as Mussolini’s “mouthpiece.”
