The Tokio official radio reveals Japanese anxiety bv admitting that the Allied offensve are pushing ahead, and that General Tojo has held conferences to decide how Japan s strength may be increased. General Tojo. the radio stated, had met the Cabinet Advisory Board and other officials lor a frank exchange of views on measures lor making Japan’s armed forces strongci. - A Tokio commentator, broadcasting to the Japanese occupied areas, complained that no matter how many times the enemy was hit, he still advanced. “Desperate Allied coun-ter-offensives in a war which is gaining m fcrccitv never seem to end, he said. With Tokio admitting that the war strain is being felt by Japan, Mr Roosevelt made a special broadcast to the Philippines saying. “Japan is already tasting defeat in the South-West-Pacific, but that is only a beginning 1 give the Filipino people my w .°f d * ha „U ie Republic of the Philippines will be established the moment the power of the Japan ese is destroyed. You will soon be redeemed from the Japanese yoke and you will be assisted in full to repair the ravages caused by th i e nTondon. the “Daily Telegraph's” naval correspondent declares that Japans reluct ance to risk her heavy battleships seriously weakened her navy. Japan now has only 21 cruisers and 78 destroyers, he says, according to figures officially published m America. No navy responsible for extended sea communications can endure attrition at the rate the Japanese Navy is being called on to do. the correspondent declares.
