DAYLIGHT ASSAULT
ON RHINELAND & RUHR MADE BY AMERICAN HEAVY , BOMBERS. INDUSTRIAL TARGETS SET ABLAZE. LONDON, August 12. American Flying Fortresses, based in Britain, made a daylight attack today on German industrial targets in the Rhineland and the Ruhr. Big formations took part. Fires were started in all the three places attacked.
Anti-aircraft guns put up a terrific barrage and fighters were up in strength. At least 20 fighters were knocked out and three more fell to the guns of Thunderbolts and Spitfires which covered the bombers on their way back. Large forces of American and R.A.F. fighters and fighter-bomb-ers supported the operation.
Over France this afternoon Marauders and Typhoons attacked enemy airfields and fighters swept over' the Channel and Northern France. One German plane was shot down. Twenty-five heavy bombers are missing from the day’s operations. The Ruhr and Rhineland were also bombed last night by R.A.F. Mosquitoes. fighter Command aircraft damaged at least nine locomotives in France and the Low Countries. RAIDS ON BRITAIN HOUSES WRECKED & PEOPLE KILLED. IN TWO COASTAL TOWNS. LONDON, August 12. About 40 enemy raiders were over Britain last night. The chief attack was made on a coastal town in South-West England. At least 12 people were killed and scores of houses were wrecked. Another town further up the coastwas also attacked. At least 8 people were killed. One of the raiders was destroyed.
