Mr Dan Butler, Solway, is making good progress after undergoing an operation in the Masterton Hospital.
The death has occurred at Palmerston North of a former resident of the Forty Mile Bush in the person of Mr William H'lill, at the age of 92 years. Lieut. S. L .Deans and Mrs Deans, of Wellington, are visiting relatives and friends in the Wairarapa. Lieut. Deans recently returned on furlough from the Middle East.
Mr T. C. Brash, Wellington, was reelected president, and Mr H. R. Sampson, Canterbury, elected vice-president, at a meeting of the board of directors of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation yesterday.
A pleasant time was spent by members of the Riverside Golf Club last night, when club members on furlough from the Middle East were honoured at a social gathering. Musical items were contributed by Messrs J. Gallagher (violin), R. Donald (harmonica), and J. Sheen. The president, Mr R. Carstens, extended a warm welcome to the returned men and the visitors. The New Zealand Railway Officers' Institute has elected the following officers for the ensuing year:—President, Mr M. J. Forde (Wellington); vice-pre-sidents. Messrs J. W. Shepherd (Auckland) and J. S. Roscoe (Christchurch); general treasurer. Mr G. R. Wlson; executive committee, Messrs C. E. F. Cunningham, A. McKinlay, J. S. Lynch and A. F. Gilmore (traffic branch), W. E. Rewai (stores, P. B. McCleary (maintenance), A. J. Martin (locomotive), F. Trewern (workshops); auditors, Messrs G. M. Howatson, J. H. Wilson. Mr M. J. Forde was reappointed editor of the “Advocate,” the official organ of the institute.
