The word canteen comes from the French “cauline’’ and the Italian “cantina,” meaning a cellar. The word was introduced to England in 1737. Its English meaning was a shop in camp, where scldiers could buy provisions and liquor. Other meanings were a small case for carrying bottles or a bottle for carrying water on a march.
