LOCAL AND GENERAL

Earthquake in Masterton.

A sharp earthquake was felt in Masterton about 3.20 o'clock yesterday afternoon.

Wellington Eating Houses.

Arrangements are being made for amendments to the eating house regulations to be drafted, giving the council wider powers of control over these premises and the licensees concerned, it was reported to the Wellington City Council last night. Rat Poison.

The opinion that the rat poison at present being made available by the council was not killing the rats which were infesting the city, was expressed by Cr. E. M. Gilmer at the meeting of the Wellington City Council last night. It Was strange, remarked Cr R. A. Wright, that last time a similar extermination campaign was entered upon, it was found that the rats actually were thriving and growing fat on the poison. Trenches to be Filled In. The Auckland central committee of the E.P.S. decided yesterday that as soon as labour is available the public shelter trenches will be filled in and the Public Works Controller, who is the city engineer, has been given instructions, the mayor said, to begin the work as soon as possible. There will be no objection to people filling in their backyard trenches. • The tunnels are to be maintained in the meantime.

Counterfeit Notes,

Spurious bank-notes are in circulation in Auckland. Those so far detected all bear the same serial number, 2 over M 355511. These counterfeit notes are what are described as “wishywashy” in appearance, and, according to a bank official, might deceive the public but not banks. Genuine notes which have been inadvertently through the family wash or a dry-cleaning process in clothing might have a similar appearance. Some American dollar bills have also been detected as counterfeit.
