NEUTRAL OPINION
WAR CANNOT LAST BEYOND END OF 1944 BUT PLENTY OF TROUBLE EXPECTED. „ WHEN IT COMES TO PEACE NEGOTIATIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.0 a.m.) LONDON, August 11. Prominent neutrals agree that the war cannot last beyond the end of 1944. The “Daily Express” publishes despatches from its correspondents in every neutral country in Europe giving the views of prominent men on how long the war will last. In Turkey, M. Yalchin, editor of the Istanbul newspaper “Vatan,” says: “I am convinced that there will be peace in Europe before next March. The end won’t come by revolution, but by dissolution—by the dead weight of the peoples’ will to stop fighting.” In Sweden, Colonel Willy Kleen, Sweden’s foremost military commentator, predicts that: “If the Allies open new fronts in the Balkans and Southern Europe in the late summer and autumn, a decision will come before the end of the year.”
In Portugal, Senor Carlos Ferrao, Portugal’s leading commentator on international affairs, says: “I don’t believe the war will last beyond 1944 and admit the possibility of its finishing this year,” In Switzerland, Dr. Ernest Spuehler, General Secretary of the Swiss League of Nations’ Union, declared that: “The war will, end within twelve months, but there will be plenty of trouble when it comes to peace negotiations. Take my tip, watch the newly-formed German National Committee in Moscow. I am convinced it will cause trouble.”
