Protest Meetings.

Two protest meetings are being held in Masterton this week in regard to the Soldiers’ Settlement and Land Sales Bill. One is to be held tonight in the A. & P. Rooms, Masterton, when all property owners and others interested are invited to be present. The second meeting will be one of district farmers, which is to be held at the A. & P. Rooms on Friday at 11 a.m. Election Candidates. Approximately 250 candidates have so far announced their intention of contesting the general election on September 25. From present indications, many more are likely to come forward, and it is very probable that the total of 265 in 1935, which was the highest number in recent years, will be exceeded. The Labour and National parties have selected most of their candidates, but several of the other political organisations have stated that further names will be announced.

Apex Investment Trust. The eleventh annual report of the Apex Investment Trust of fy.Z., Ltd., shows that the net profit, after providing for all expenses of management, amounted to £940, to which is added the amount brought forward from last year . £159, making available £1099. The directors recommend that this amount be appropriated as follow: Pay a dividend of 2| per cent (free of Social and National Security charges) for the year ended June 30, 1943, absorbing £625; transfer to taxation reserve £2OO, leaving to be carried forward £274. The net profit on securities sold during the year amounted to £172, which increases the above fund to £llOO. The reserve funds are employed in the company’s business. As at June 30, 1943, the Stock Exchange securities were valued at £29,197 5s 1 (approx), an improvement of £5,635 15s 4d as compared with last year. The company’s funds are invested in New Zealand Government Stock, £460; preference shares, £2019 9s 2d; ordinary shares, £27,435 16s 4d, the shares being spread over 52 different companies. Mr H. A. R. Dunderdale retires, but is eligible and offers himself for re-election as a director.
