OPTIMIST CLUB
HOME CHILDREN A party of boys from the Methodist Home, and the Master, Mr Bateup, were entertained at last night’s tea meeting of the Masterton Optimist Club. There was a large and happy gathering. After a hot meal had been served, the sheriff and song sessions were held, followed 'by an Oxford debate. Mr Bateup spoke oil the splendid work which was being carried out at the Methodist Home. The president, Mr C. W. Gaze, explained to the visitors and new members that the Optimist Club was an adjunct of the Y.M.C.A., and that its ideal was patterned on the Rotary ideal of service —service to the Y.M.C.A. and to the community. The club was open to all with the proviso that they became associate members of the Y.M.C.A. by paying a subscription of ss. Membership was free to those who were full members of the Y.M.C.A. Mr Gaze explained that by entertaining boys from orphan and other homes in Masterton the club was furthering the interests of the Y.M.C.A. organisation. Club members serving overseas in different, branches of the forces were furthering the goodwill of the Y.M.C.A., and by encouraging youths to speak and debate they were being fitted for the part they might play in civic affairs.
Arrangements were made for a debate with a team from the Wairarapa College next Tuesday night on the subject “That everlasting pfeace is Possible.” Messrs E. J. Esler (leader), Colin Lyttle and Campbell Smith will be the Optimist Club team. t
