STATE RENTAL HOUSES

DEDUCTIONS FROM GENERAL RATES. IN EVENT OF NON-OCCUPANCY No payment of rates is made by the Government in respect to State rental houses during periods they may be vacant in the year. This applies to general rates. In a schedule submitted to the Masterton Borough Council, setting out the proportionate amount of rates other than special rates to be deducted from the year's levy in the 1943-44 demands, is a list of 14 Masterton State houses, which have been vacant in the 1942-43 year for periods ranging from 10 to 32 days. The amount of deduction claimed ranges from 2s 7d to 8s Id. It is pointed out that no other property owners are allowed such a concession. As far as other propertyowners are concerned, the only provision for relief is that in the case of a house being vacant for over six months, an application can be made for the rates to be reduced by half.
