GUILTY OF MURDER
MCAULAY SENTENCED HARD LABOUR FOR LIFE. FINAL ACT IN ASHBURTON TRAGEDY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 5. After retiring for two hours the jury returned a verdict of guilty in the case in which James Hector McAulay, aged 18, was charged with the murder of Mrs M. W. Webster, taxi-driver. Mr Justice Northcroft referred tQ the jury’s verdict as "a very proper one." When the customary question was put to accused whether he had anything to say before sentence was imposed, McAulay was silent for a few moments. On being nudged by the warder who stood at his side in the dock the prisoner then replied in a firm voice, “No, sir." When the jury returned the foreman intimated that the jury wished to commend the manner in which the case had been presented by the police. To prisoner the judge said: "The jury have found the only possible verdict under the circumstances, and it is my duty to sentence'you to imprisonment with hard labour for life.”
