NOT A NEUTRAL

TURKEY A FULL ALLY OF BRITAIN

STATEMENT BY AMBASSADOR.

EVENTS OF WAR PERIOD

RECALLED

(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, August 4.

The Turkish Ambassador to Britain, M. Orbay, who has just returned from a visit to Ankara, today told the “Daily Mail” that Turkey was a full ally of Britain, although she was not fighting in the field. This is the first time a Turkish Minister has made such a frank statement on Turkish-British relations.

“Public opinion in Turkey holds strongly to the alliance binding that country to Britain,” said M. Orbay. “We never faltered in this attitude at a time when many other countries thought the war. was going badly for you. The Turkish Government signed the alliance with Britain and France after the war began. The collapse of France might have justified Turkey in asking for a revision of the arrangement. She did not do that, nor, after the Germans swept down from the Balkans, did Turkey waver in her fidelity. I find my people at home rather puzzled by the fact that the British Press frequently refers to Turkey as a neutral.”
