CARTERTON
ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS LOYAL HEART OF OAK LODGE. (“Times-Age” Special.) P.G. Bro. W. McPherson presided at the fortnightly meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge, there being a good attendance. One member residing at Hawera declared on the sick funds of the lodge. Sick pay totalling £5 3s 4d was ordered io be paid. P.G. Bro A. R. StelTert, who is a prisoner of war in Germany, wrote extending greetings to the lodge members, and stating that he was fit and well. A member who asked for a loan to purchase a home in Petone was referred to the Trustees.
Three members notified that they had left to undertake military duties overseas.
DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL
. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. Mr H. J. McKenzie presided over the monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School Committee last night. There were also present Messrs F. Denbee, C. K. Goodin, G. L. Chatwin, W. E. Knowles and Mr W. Martin (headmaster). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs R. Williams and P. L. Beere. The Wellington Education Board forwarded a grant for incidental expenses amounting to £22 13s Id. The treasurer’s statement showed a credit balance of £97 3s 4d. Mr Chatwin moved, seconded by Mr Denbee, that in the event of a certain building being removed to the school grounds, application be made to the Education Board to have a heater installed in the building. The motion was carried. In reply to a letter received from the school committee in regard to the disgraceful state of the footpath adjacent to the State Theatre after a recent dance, the Town Clerk wrote stating that the borough overseer would in future inspect the locality early in the morning .after further dances at the theatre. The headmaster's report showed that 397 pupils were on the primary school roll and 42 on the secondary. It was reported that a country library service had been inaugurated. It was reported that a contract had been let for the formation of a basketball court. Personal Items. Mrs May, Waipukurau, is staying with her parents, Mr and Mrs A. J. Lindop, Garrison Street. Sergeant T. Harp, who underwent an operation at the Wellington Hospital, has returned home. Mr W. Pearson, formerly of Carterton, is an inmate of the Auckland Hospital, and his condition is causing some anxiety to his relatives. Sister C. M. Kelland, a sister of Mrs Gillies, Carterton, has left for overseas, where she will join a military hospital unit. Vital Statistics. In July 4 births, one marriage and 2 deaths were registered in Carterton. The figures for the corresponding month last year were 9. 1 and 8, respectively. REGENT THEATRE “SHIPS WITH WINGS.” An outstanding British production, “Ships With Wings,” a thrilling story of the air, will be shown tonight, with John Clements, Jane Baxter and Leslie Banks in the chief roles.
