EKETAHUNA

WELCOME HOME NUMBER OF DISTRICT SOLDIERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Soldiers who are on furlough from the 2nd N.Z.E.F.. and who recently returned from the Middle East, were entertained by the residents of Eketahuna and the surrounding districts on. Tuesday night, and with their relatives and friends spent a very enjoyable time. The Town Hall was crowded, and only half of the floor space could be used for dancing. Rowden’s Orchestra supplied excellent music, and Mr J. R. Wakelin acted as M.C. A large placard, on which were the words, “Welcome to Eketahuna,” was placed at the back of the stage, which was gaily decorated. Mr W. Olsen, Mayor, welcomed the soldiers on behalf of the residents, and expressed pleasure at seeing them all home again.

Mr F. M. Goggin, in the absence of Mr J. B. Carruthers, spoke on behalf of the County residents, and Mr A. B. Fordyce for the R.S.A. Captain Mitchell (Maori Battalion) returned thanks on behalf of the guests. The buffet supper was supplied by town and country residents. The supper was in charge of the Borough Ladies’ Soldiers’ Comforts Committee, assisted by country residents.

A statue waltz was won by Mrs Trillo and Mr Udy, and a Monte Carlo dance by Miss I. Waterreus and Mr E. Goss,

Mr and Mrs F. H. Baucke have been on a visit to Napier.

Mrs an,d Miss Brittain are visiting Napier.

Mrs H. Hanson, Nireaha, is seriously ill in the Pahiatua Hospital. Mrs N. Richardson is paying a visit to Napier.
