WAVERING HUNGARY

REPORTED NAZI PRESSURE GERMAN TROOPS MASSED ON FRONTIER. LATE MEETING OF CABINET IN BUDAPEST. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.50 a.m.) LONDON, July 28. An unconfirmed report states that German troops are massing at several points on the Hungarian frontier, says the Associated Press correspondent at Istanbul. It is known, adds the correspondent, that the Germans have exerted considerable pressure on the Hungarians lately in an attempt to turn the apparent Hungarian determination to cease active participation in the war. There are no details of the disposition or number of the German troops. The Budapest radio announced that the Hungarian Cabinet met yesterday and sat until late at night discussing current affairs. BALKAN SATELLITES SEVERAL SEEKING WAY TO SAFETY. (Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, July 28. Hungary, who is putting out peace feelers through Turkey, has informed Yugoslavia that she will give up a strip of Yugoslav territory annexed in 1914. says the British United Press diplomatic correspondent. He adds that similar moves are expected from Bulgaria and Rumania. The Germans’ satellites in the Balkans now do not expect a German victory. They anticipate a German withdrawal from the Balkans to defence lines across the old Austrian-Croat frontier, westwards to the River Po, and thence to Italy’s west coast.

The “Daily Telegraph’s” Ankara correspondent predicts that within a few days Ankara will become an important diplomatic centre. Turkish official circles believe that Italy must get out of the war, and that a decision will be made soon. It is also believed that Hungary will come out with Italy. Rumania hesitates whether to throw in her lot with Italy or to seek a separate peace, after having a crack at Hungary. Rumania, but for the Transylvanian problem, might leave the war immediately.
