Mrs Marmaduke Bethell, North Canterbury, is visiting Masterton. Mrs T. Jordan, The Terrace, Lansdowne, is visiting her sister, Mrs Edgar, Brooklyn, Wellington. Mrs O. S. O. Gibson, of the Tauranga Vicarage,' is paying a short visit' to Masterton, and is the guest of her mother, Mrs R. K. Jackson.

The engagement is announced of Muriel Jean, eldest daughter of Mr and the late Mrs J. D. Gooding, Carterton, to William John Nicholls, ex-service man, eldest son of Mrs and the late Mr W. Nicholls, Napier.

The engagement is announced between Joyce Mary, second daughter of Mr and Mrs G. Theobald, of Martinborough, to Philip George, eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs G. Dixon, of Wellington.

The death has occurred of Mr Peter McWhannell, Hataitai, aged 68. He served his engineering apprenticeship in Lancashire and came to New Zealand early in this century. As a young man he represented Wellington at Association football and founded die St. John’s Football Club. He was a well’ known bowler. He won the Hataitai club's championship singles in 1912, 1917, 1920 and 1935, the championship pairs in 1916, 1924 and 1927, the champion fours in 1929 and 1939, and was in the winning teams at the Christmas tournament of 1924 and 1927 and at the Easter tournament fours in 1939. The Wairarapa .staff of Dalgety and Co., Ltd., made a presentation to the company’s manager, Mr Mannering, on the eve of his departure for Napier. Various members of the staff spoke of their keen appreciation of the friendly relations that had existed between the manager and the staff, and of the kindly co-operation and consideration shown by Mr Mannering. In making a presentation to Mr Mannering, Mi Perrin stated that the staff felt they were losing a personal friend. They congratulated him on his promotion and wished him every success in the future. Mr Mannering, in reply, thanked the staff for their loyal support and cooperation. Opportunity was taken co extend a welcome to Mr A. L. Fetch, the new manager.
