Hitherto unknown documents of great historical interest have been discovered among the Central Archives of Military History, in the U.S.S.R. They throw new light on the battle of Borodino in 1812, in- which Napoleon’s Army met its first crushing rebuff. The documents show the Russian Army to have been 131,500 strong and to have possessed 606 guns (not 640, as hitherto believed). The Russian force which retreated from Tzarevo-Zaim-ische towards Borodino actively withstood the French blows, especially the attack of August 23, and was not disorganised by them as some historians maintain. Some of the newly discovered documents give the disposition of the Russian troops on the field of Borodino. LATE ADVERTISEMENT.
