Mo Kotoa Scout Troop. At a parade of the Mo Katoa Scout Troop, Scout R. Sharman passed the Tenderfoot tests, obtaining excellent marks. Scout S. Cretney was invested as a Tenderfoot, having passed the tests. Patrol Leader P. Robbins was awarded the Patrol Leader’s Hat Badge after having served a month’s probation.
Pussy Willow a Noxious Weed. The early spring flowers of the pussy willow are much esteemed about Masterton as an indoors decoration, but there are places where the plant is not looked on with favour. The St. Kilda Borough Council, Dunedin, has recently taken the necessary steps to have the pussy willow declared a noxious weed within the borough.
Eclipses of Sun and Moon. A partial eclipse of the sun will be visible in New Zealand on August 1. The annular eclipse will be seen fully only in the Antarctic Ocean south of Australia between 3.6 p.m. and 5.26 p.m., New Zealand summer lime, and partially in Australia and New Zealand, most favourable conditions being in West Australia. A. partial eclipse of the moon on August 16 will be visible in New Zealand and will last from 5.58 a.m. till 8.58 a.m.
Donation to Social Security Fund.
“Enclosed find bank notes for £3O to be credited to the Social Security Fund; please acknowledge per medium of the Press,” stated an anonymous letter received through the post by the Minister of Social Security, Mr Parry, yesterday. Mr Parry said it was the first time he had received a sum of money so large to be paid into the Social Security Fund, though during the raising of the Liberty Loans some beneficiaries had written asking that their payments for a period be paid to the loans’ account. price of Eggs. The Wellington Egg Marketing Committee and the Internal Marketing Division working in conjunction with the Price Tribunal, have arranged for a decrease in the wholesale price of eggs. The new prices which are now effective are as follows, with the previous prices shown in parentheses:— Heavy, 3s (3s 3d); standard, 2s lOd (3s Id); medium, 2s 8d (2s lid); pullet, 2s 4d (2s 6d); large duck, 2<j lOd (3s Id); small duck, 2s 8d (2s lid). Authorised receiving depots wilS pay 2s 5d a dozen for ungraded eggs. Raffler of Ducks Fined.
Edward James Vallely was fined £2 and 10s costs by Mr W. F. Stilwell, S.M., in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday for raffling ducks. Senior-Sergeant Paine said that accused bought the ducks for 19s 6d and raffled them by the sale of Is tickets for 325. Mr G. I. Joseph said accused found the £4 10s a week he was receiving as compensation for an accident insufficient to live on, and he had started raffling ducks to augment his income. The magistrate said accused would find his duck expensive.
