STORIES OF BLOODSHED
IN CLASHES BETWEEN ITALIANS & GERMANS. UNCONFIRMED REPORTS REACH LONDON. (Received This Day, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 26. Although there is no confirmation, reports reaching London state that bloodshed occurred between Italians and Germans before telephone communications between Sicily and Switzerland was cut off. German anti-aircraft guns, it is reported, opened fire on a mob in Milan. Demonstrations, occurring in many parts of the country, are reported from Vichy.
The Pope has again appealed to King Victor Emmanuel to declare Rome an open city. The Pope, also, it is reported, is interested in the suggestion that Italy should make peace before an Allied invasion of the Italian mainland.
