EDUCATION BUILDINGS
DISCUSSION IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The House of Representatives spent the morning sitting today in discussing the Estimates. The first vote under consideration was that of education buildings. Several members drew attention to defects in education buildings in their districts and the Minister of Education (Mr Mason) quoted figures to show what the present Government had done in this respect. The amount spent on education buildings had risen he said, from £131,451 .in 1934-35 to £870,108 in 1938-39, the year before the war broke out. Although expenditure had been reduced somewhat since then, nevertheless a considerable amount of school building had taken place, despite the necessity of diverting attention to defence construction. At present, he added, a list was being made out of all school works and it was expected they would be able to dispose of reasonably urgent work within a short time and in two or three years he considered a very great deal of work would have been accomplished. The Education Buildings Vote of £225,000 was passed by the House, Which also passed the Native Department Vote of £273,700 and the Native Trustee Account of £18.050, and was discussing the Native Land Settlement Account of £50,000 at the luncheon adjournment at 1 p.rn. , j
