GAS WORKS LIGHTING
BOROUGH ASKS POWER BOARD FOR REDUCED CHARGE. CONSIDERATION DEFERRED. Referring at yesterday’s meeting of the Wairarapa Electric Power Board to a request by the Masterton Borough Council for a reduction in the charge of lighting for the Municipal Gas Works, a matter which was deferred until the next meeting, the ManagingSecretary, Mr G. Brown said that, at the Masterton gasworks, over a period of 6 months, 1254 units at a cost of £22 3s had been consumed. Apparently the works were lit all night. The ordinary domestic rate was charged. The Mayor of Masterton wanted the rate reduced. - “We cannot do it,” said Mr J. W. Colquhoun. “If we do it for one we must do it for another.” “If we can make a concession we should help them if we can,” said Mr H. P. Hugo. He added that the board was the gas work's only competitor. Mr Brown said the Borough Council had met the board in having reduced the hours for street lighting. However, it seemed ridiculous to him that although it cost the Borough Council £5 per m'onth for the all-night lighting of an urinal it only cost the borough £22 for 6 months for lighting the whole of the gas works.
