GREAT SAVING
IN SHIPPING SPACE. AS RESULT OF DEHYDRATION. (Special P.A. Correspondent.) (Received This Day, 10.15 a.m.) LONDON, July 21. A Ministry of Food official stated dehydrated cheese, mixed with potato flour and compressed into blocks, was among the new forms of food put into battle dress for the forces. The saving of shipping space last year, compared with before the war, by importing boned, moulded and telescoped carcases of meat totalled 41,000,000 cubic feet. The importation of dried eggs, instead of shell eggs, saved 25,000,000 cubic feet and the importation of milk powder, instead of condensed milk, saved 1,000,000 cubic feet. This represented 750,000 tons or seventy-five 10,-000-ton ships. Several dehydrated foods can be successfully pressed into blocks. Dried meat has its storage life doubled by compression and dried carrot, cabbage and potato can be similarly treated. Plans are being formed for importing butterfat should the refrigerated shipping position become more difficult.
