PRODUCE PRICES

EFFECT ON LAND VALUES. STATEMENT BY MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A statement that the biggest factor in preventing inflation of land prices was the stabilisation of the prices of farm produce and that this had been done by the Government, was made by the Minister of Lands. Mr Barclay, replying in the House of Representatives last night to a question asked by Mr Meachen (Government, Marlborough). The Minister said that a special committee had been set up to watch the position. This committee had reported that a tendency had been observed for onefamily farms to exceed Government valuation. This report was at present under consideration by the Government, and if it were found that legislation was necessary and would be effective in combating the tendency to-1 ward inflation and in keeping a reasonably wide land market available for ex-servicemen, then legislation would be framed accordingly.
