RAPID PROGRESS
IN VAST ENVELOPING MOVEMENT MADE BY RUSSIAN ARMIES THRUSTS INTO OREL SALIENT & FURTHER SOUTH. GERMAN COUNTER-ATTACKS THROWN BACK. LONDON, July 21. The vast Russian enveloping movement round the Orel salient made rapid progress on all sides today. A Moscow communique states that the Russian army bearing down on Orel from the north-east is only nine miles from the fortress. Another Russian army from the cast is also now only nine miles from Orel. During the day, Russian forces captured over 100 more inhabited places and made an average advance of from three to 11 miles. German counter-attacks were all broken up with heavy losses. In the Byelgorod area, 100 miles further south, Russian troops broke enemy counter-attacks and continued to advance. In the Donetz Basin the Russians again improved their positions considerably in the area south of Iszum and south-west of Voroshilovgrad.
