Mrs Ewart, Lansdowne, is visiting Wellington. Miss Jean Clarry, Essex Street, Masterton, is spending a few days in Wellington. Mr B. V. Cooksley, Taita, was yesterday elected president of the Dominion Council of Commercial Gardeners for the fifth consecutive term. Mi’ and Mrs W. S. Davidson announce the engagement of their youngest daughter Elma to Leslie Clifford (2nd N.Z.E.F.), eldest son of Mrs Brown and the late Mr L. Clifford, Blenheim. The death occurred while a prisoner of war in Italy of Sergeant Rangi Akuira, the well-known Manawatu, Hawke’s Bay and Maori All Black footballer. When playing on one occasion for the Palmerston North High School in a school tournament he performed the remarkable feat of potting 19 goals out of 20 from all angles during the games in one day. The twentieth kick was a poster.
