OBITUARY

MR. SAMUEL DAWSON. The death occurred yesterday of Mr Samuel Dawson, of Mauriceville at the age of 38 years. The late Mr. Dawson, who was born in Belfast, Ireland, came to New Zealand 71 years ago in the sailing .ship Waipa. He landed at Port Chalmers and took up land in the South Island. When the Forty Mile Bush was opened for settlement, Mr. Dawson came north and was one of the first settlers in the Mangamahoe district. He was of a retiring disposition. For many years he served on the Mangamahoe School Committee. He retired from active farming operations 24 years ago and lived in Lansdowne until the death of his wife after which he had lived with his daughter, Mrs. E. W. Cheetham, by whom he is survived. There are three grandchildren. His only son was killed in the Great War. The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving the chapel of Hyde’s Funeral Service Ltd., following a service at 2.30 p.m., for the Masterton Cemetery.
