ALL-AMERICAN RAID
The raid was an all-American one. It started at 11 am., when a force of Flying Fortresses, unescorted, unloaded their bombs on one of the marshalling yards. Three-quarters of an hour later another force of Flying Fortresses attacked the same yards and this force was followed immediately by a formation of Liberators, which bombed the second marshalling yards. Finally, a very large force of Marauder and Mitchell bombers, escorted by Lightnings, took up the attack and concentrated on the airfield. In the first attack on the marshalling yards direct hits were scored in the yards and on trains loaded with petrol. Extensive damage was caused to other railway communications in the area.
