LOCAL AND GENERAL
Child Drinks Turpentine. Graham Wilmshurst, aged two years, was admitted to the Masterton Hospital during the week-end. The child had drunk turpentine out of a bottle. The condition of the child was stated to be better this morning.
Salvation Army Band. The Masterton Salvation Army Band attracted considerable attention when it marched through Cole and Pownall Streets yesterday. Members of the band looked smart in their new uniforms, and their playing was particularly good.
American Club Dances. The American Red Cross Service Club in Masterton held well attended dances on Saturday night and yesterday afternoon. This week a special feature will be the South American dance on Wednesday night. The club will be artistically decorated on the theme of ‘'South of the Border” and patrons are assured of a bright evening's entertainment.
Salvage Efforts Fail. A further attempt on Saturday to refloat the sunken dredge Canterbury at Lyttelton proved unsuccessful. As the dredge rose, it turned on its side and filled up with water again. The funnel became entangled with the portal of one of the big electric cranes on the wharf, threatening to pull the crane from the rails. Fortunately, the funnel collapsed and the crane pulled free. Deterioration of Highways, Grave concern at the progressive deterioration of highways in North Auckland, and the failure of local bodies in the affected areas to carry out adequate maintenance, was expressed at a meeting of the council of the Automobile Association (Auckland). The view was held that the existing organisation for highway maintenance had failed! and was out of date. The time was coming when the council would have to ask for a more national system of control of the roads. Pre-Election Session. With the resumption of the Parliamentary session tomorrow afternoon, members of the House of Representatives will be reassembling for the last meeting of the present Parliament before its dissolution and the general election When the House adjourned on July 2, an afternoon had been devoted to discussion on the estimates of departmental expenditure, and it is expected that consideration of these will be continued this week. Though it has been announced that the general election is to take place in September, the exact date has not yet been announced. The Minister of Marine, Mr O’Brien, said in Greymouth a week ago that he thought he could safely say that the election would be held between September 11 and September 30.
