Mr and Mrs P. H. Shaw, of Chapel Street; Masterton, left yesterday for Auckland, where they will spend a holiday. The engagement is announced of June, the only daughter of Mr and Mrs A. L. Askew, Lansdowne, to Colin (2nd N.Z.E.F.), third son of the late Mr and Mrs J. Duncan, Wellington.
The death occurred in Eltham recently of Mrs W. E. Horan, one-time licensee of the Alhambra, Princess and Clyde Quay Hotels, Wellington, Club Hotel, Greytown, Royal Hotel, Bunnythorpe, Jubilee Hotel, Otaki, and the Eltham Hotel, Eltham. She is survived by her husband, one daughter, Mrs Hill, Eltham, two brothers, Messrs George Meharry, New Plymouth, and Alan Meharry, Eltham, and one sister, Mrs Bryden, Wellington. The death has occurred at Rotorua, states a Press Association message, of Mr John Ulrich Collins, formerly a master at King’s College, Auckland, for more than 20 years. Mr Collins was a member of a well-known Marlborough family and was educated at Nelson College, where he had a distinguished athletic career. In 1886, he joined the teaching staff of Wellington College, and later went to Christ’s College. While in Christchurch, he took the degree of B.A. at Canterbury College, resigning in 1906. The appointment of Mr Leonard Irwin, Wellington, as Chief Electoral Officer for New Zealand, was officially announced yetserday. Mr Irwin has been acting in that capacity since the death in April last of Mr G. G. Hodgkins. He was born in Oamaru in 1908 and was educated at the Waitaki Boys’ High School. He joined the Public Service in 1925 and was appointed to the Department of Internal Affairs. In 1928 he was transferred from that department to the Chief Electoral Office, and has been attached to that office since then.
The Bishop of Waiapu. the Rt Rev G. V. Gerard, Senior Chaplain, 2nd N.Z.E.F., was present unexpectedly at yesterday afternoon's sitting of the Wellington Diocesan Synod. While he was present . a motion on the order paper that hearty good wishes be conveyed to him came before the synod. The motion was moved by Canon H. E. K. Fry, who said Bishop Gerard's work while overseas, including his captivity. had been followed with admiration by his friends at home. The Rev N. Winhall, a chaplain who has served overseas, seconded the motion, speaking of the regard in which Bishop Gerard is held by the soldiers. The motion was carried by acclamation. Treasurer of the Wanganui A. and P. Association for several years. Mr C. M. Strouts died yesterday at Wanganui. A retired banker, he had resided in Wanganui for more than 15 years, and was a formei' manager of the Bank of Australasia in Masterton, where he lived for a number of years. Mr Strouts was most actively associated in patriotic fund drives during the last few years. He was a president of the Wanganui Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals a member of the Western District Council of the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand, an enthusiastic worker in the Wanganui branch of the Navy League, and treasurer of the Wanganui Bowling Club. Mr Strouts is survived by his wife and two daughters. Mesdamcs G. A. Kemp, Gisborne, and D. C. Morice, Wanganui. Mrs Morice’s husband is a prisoner of war .in Italy.
