COUNTY AFFAIRS
VVAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNTV MEETING AT CARTERTON. LAND PURCHASED ON WHICH TO ERECT OFFICES. (“Times-Age” Special.) Councillor A. E. Reid presided over the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council held at Carterton yesterday. There were also present: Councillors D. McGregor, A. McGregor, F. Court, E. W. Allen. F. C. Cameron, L. S. Gallon and R. O. Rayner. An apology for absence was received from Councillor Strang. The chairman feelingly referred to the death of Mr W. A. Renall, who had been the representative on the council for the Parkvale Riding for 211 years, and who had to retire owing to failing health. Members stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect to his memory. The treasurer reported a credit balance at the bank of £5.896. The committee which had been appointed to inspect the headworks of the Taratahi Water Race recommended the purchase of a strip of land from the Rayner estate upon which to plant trees to protect the intake. The com•mittee's recommendation was adopted. An offer from Mr R. Wilson. Waihakeke, to allow the council to divert water at present passing the Waihakekc road drain, to be taken through his property was accepted. This will allow the council to close a dangerous road drain. A striking of the county rates was passed. It was reported that Mr J. Petersen, of Waihakekc, had dedicated to the council a corner of his property in order to allow a bad corner on the road to be removed. I It was decided to purchase two sections in Belvedere Street, Carter ton, for the purpose of erecting thereon up-to-date county offices. The county engineer was instructed to prepare a report on all highway bridges in the county. He was also authorised to carry out earthquake damage repairs to the Wainuioru Bridge in accordance with the suggestion of the district engineer. A portion of the Matarawa Road below the railway crossing is to be widened. The county chairman and Councillor Court were appointed to inspect water races at ‘'The Cliffs” and report to the next meeting of the council.
