Two of the successful candidates at the recent State examination for maternity nurses were Misses W. V. Larson and R. E. Walker (honours), who were formerly on the staff of the Masterton Hospital. The engagement is announced of Alison Blondel, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs H. A. Seifert, Palmerston North, to Alexander William (R.N.Z.A.F.), youngest son'of Mr and Mrs C. G. Monro, Lansdowne. The marriage will take place shortly. The death occurred in Lower Hutt of Mr William Patrick Patton, aged 86 years. Born in Castlemain, County Kerry, Ireland, Mr Patton came to New Zealand in 1880. He was first clerk and registrar of the Court in the Hutt Valley, a position which he retained till he retired 20 years ago. Wairarapa members of a party of sick and wounded soldiers who returned yesterday from the Middle East include Signaller K. M. Fauvel, Ptes, L. G. Fenwick, G. H. Higginson, C. K. Walker, Sergeant H. C. Pearce, Corporals L. W. Rogers, A. M. Sanson, Colin Duncan, Driver G. H. T. Jowett and Sister P. Hubbard. Messrs Norman Lee (Masterton) and D. C. Prior (Pahiatua) have returned from Wellington where they represented the Wairarapa Centre at the annual meeting of the Dominion Council of the New Zealand Red Cross Society. Mr Norman Lee was elected to the Dominion Executive of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, this being the first occasion on which the Wairarapa has been represented on this body. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Sheepowners’ Federation in Wellington yesterday, the following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr James Begg; vicepresidents, Messrs Gordon Fulton (Canterbury) and Claude H. Williams (Gisborne); hon. treasurer, Mr G. H. Grigg (Canterbury); representative on the executive of the N.Z Farmers’ Federation, Mr James Begg; representatives on the council of the N.Z. Farmers’ Federation, Messrs James Begg, Gordon Fulton, C. H. Williams and Colonel N. P. Adams.
The Pahiatua Plunket Society has elected the following officers for the ensuing year: —President, Mrs H. Paterson; vice-presidents, Mesdames Wilson, Tinney, Herbert, Purdie, Goer, Cornelius and Miss Gibson; general committee, Mesdames Carter and Higginson (Eketahuna), H. Horne and L. Whittington (Woodville), A. W. Bisset. T. Cotter, J. P. Delahunty, W. B. Gray, G. F O'Rourke. W. H. Purdie, M. A. Robertson, E. Scandrett, S. T. Tinney, E. B. Watson, W. H. Watson, J. D. Wilson, A. A. Vaughan, S. J. Judd, H. Smith, L. Truscott, J. Gregory, C. Holdaway, Murphy and Miss Cody; executive committee, Mesdames J. D. Wilson, Tinney, Bisset, Gray and Purdie; auditor, Mr L. Truscott; treasurer, Mrs W. B. Gray; secretary, Mrs M. A. Robertson; advisory secretary, Mrs W. H. Purdie; assistant treasurer, Mrs S. G. Hogg.
There was a large and representative attendance at the funeral of the late Mrs A. J. Parsons, which took place yesterday. A service at Hyde's Chapel, Masterton, was conducted by Lt. Commander Hoelt, C.F., of ' the Marine Corps. The pall-bearers were Messrs A. Aydon, J. Beresford, G. Daubney and J. Y. Douglas. The Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich conducted a service at the Karori Crematorium, where the pall-bearers were Messrs R. Whyte, F. Cheveral, H. Byres, J. Williams, M. Maxwell and J. Y. Douglas. Many beautiful wreaths were received, among which were those from the W.F.C.A. drapery department. Masterton Townswomen’s Guild, Wairarapa Interhouse Association, N.C.O.’s and Guardsmen, Medical Platoon, of the Home Guard, and the committee and members of the Masterton Soldiers’ Club.
