Mr E. H. Murney, Otago, a former vice-president, has been elected a Dominion life-member of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, on the executive of which he served for 10 years. Mr L. Shepherd, of the Masterton staff of the Union Bank of Australia, Ltd., has received notice of his transfer to the head office of the bank. His successor is Mr A. F. Drought, of the Christchurch branch. The engagement is announced of Sheila Patricia, youngest daughter of Mr D. and the late Mrs Bennett, “Hoebridge,” Mauriceville, to Sgt. Esless Stonewall Bass, U.S.M.C., only son of Mrs E. J. Carroll, Jackson, Mississippi, U.S.A. A Requiem Mass for the late General Wladyslaw Sikorski, Prime Minister of Poland and Commander-in-Chief of the Polish Forces will be celebrated in St Mary of the Angels’ Church, Boulcott Street, Wellington, tomorrow, commencing at 9/a.m. Brigadier W. G. Gentry, D. 5.0., 0.8. E., who commanded an infantry brigade of the New Zealand division during the battle of Egypt last year, has returned to New Zealand to take up an appointment on the general staff at the army headquarters, Wellington. The death occurred suddenly at Winton yesterday of Dr Peter Gow. He was a past president of the Winton Jockey Club, life member and past president of the Winton A. and P. Association and a foundation member of that body. Dr Gow was also a member of the committee of the trotting club.

The death is reported from Waipukurau of Mr Alan Murray Johnstone, of “Waikareao.” Mr Johnstone, who was 53 years of age, was educated in Australia, studying law after his return to New Zealand. He served overseas with the N.Z. forces in the 1914-18 war and on his return took up sheepfarming. At the annual meeting of delegates, representing Red Cross areas throughout New Zealand, in Wellington yesterday, Sir R. Heaton Rhodes was unanimously re-elected president and Mr C. G. White, Dominion chairman, was also returned to office. Those elected to the Dominion executive for the coming year were: —Mesdames W. G. Tweedy, M. H. Tripp, Mr C. H. Chapman, M.P., Mr J. Abel, Major A. E. Gibbons. Messrs G. T. Paterson. C. V. Smith, J. F. Campbell and Norman Lee.
