SOVIET UKRAINE

GREAT DEVELOPMENT OF SCHOOLS. PRIOR TO GERMAN INVASION. In 1940-41 Ukrainian secondary schools were attended by about 2,000,000 boys and girls—46 times as many as in 1914-15. In 1914 there wore 19 higher educational institutions attended by some 27,000 students. In 1938-39 there were 129, with 125,000 students. The Soviet Government, as always, was particularly solicitous for the welfare of the children. At the outbreak of war there were 32 school children’s clubs and 700 other cultural institutions for children, such as technical laboratories and sports clubs. After school hours the boys and girls were welcome to spend their leisure in various factories, acquainting themselves with the latest scientific developments, or learning how to drive a car or a tractor. They were encouraged to study music or painting, and to make agricultural experiments. A great network of clubs, village reading rooms and school libraries stocked with millions of books catered for the growing appetite for learning and for the leisure of the people of the Soviet Ukraine.—“ Soviet War News.”
