SPLENDID RESULT

THIRD LIBERTY LOAN OVERSUBSCRIBED BY UPWARDS OF £4,000,000. PHENOMENALLY WIDE SUPPORT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. An announcement that the £35,000,000 Third Liberty War Loan had been over-sub-scribed by £4,054,386, was made last night by the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash. He said the response to his appeal for widespread support had been phenomenal, the total number of subscribers being 419,763.

All the money was not yet in, the Minister stated, but when the final figure was known about Wednesday or Thursday, it would be announced by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, who would give an analysis of what had been accomplished. Mr Nash said it was a splendid effort, worthy of New Zealand and worthy of the cause for which we were fighting.

Details of the subscriptions, which amount to £39,054,386, are as follow: — Stock: 62,570 applications for £29,609,755.

Bonds: 182,193 applications for £2,063,429.

National Savings: At least 175,000 depositors for a total of £7,381,202. For the purposes of the loan campaign the Dominion was divided into 18 districts corresponding to the chief postal areas, each being given an objective. The results on a district basis showing the percentage of the target reached in the six districts which headed the list are as follow:—

£ Percentage. Nelson 665,842 121 Blenheim 323,153 119 Wellington .... 5,094,820 117 Invercargill .... 1,486,955 114 Dunedin 2,783,830 112 Auckland 7,186,467 107 The British Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Kingsley Wood, has cabled to Mr Nash as follows: “I have followed the progress of the Liberty Loan with keen interest and congratulate you most heartily on the magnificent result which shows the determination of the people of New Zealand to devote all their resources to the common cause and to speed the path of the United Nations to victory. - ’ Mr Nash said there had never been more widespread interest in a war loan. The organisation had been magnificent and the enthusiasm, energy and goodwill unparalleled. WELL BONE! RESPONSE TO LIBERTY LOAN. MASTERTON’S EFFORT PRAISED. “The district has done very well indeed and would have done still better if it had been appealed to as a district, < apart from any postal district,” said the Mayor of Master ton, Mr T. Jordan, referring, as chairman of the Masterton War Loan Committee, to the success of the local campaign, in which Masterton subscribed £362,542, which was over £lOO,OOO above the quota. The district's fine response, said Mr Jordan, was submerged in the Wellington figures. It took a pride in itself, which was not given an outlet, as it had no community of interest with Wellington. Mr Jordan expressed his thanks to all who had assisted with the campaign locally. Many of the workers, he said, were unknown to him. Not least was the assistance given by the Postmaster, Mr M. M. Simpson, who had worked most assiduously; by the organiser, Mr J. D. O’Connor, who had also put in much hard work and by the American Marine Band.

On Saturday morning two members of the Masterton unit of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary sold bonds to the value of £653.
