HEAVY DAMAGE
DONE TO VITAL GERMAN AERODROMES IN RAID BY FLYING FORTRESSES BOSTONS BLAST FACTORIES AND POWER STATIONS. BOMBS DROPPED FROM LOW LEVEL. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 11.30 a.m.) RUGBY, July 11. Numerous direct hits were scored on vital German aerodromes, both at Caen and Abbeville. This was revealed by the United States Eighth Air Force Bomber Command, after a study of photos taken from Flying Fortresses during the attack yesterday. One large formation, following instructions to avoid indiscriminate bombing over France, brought their bombs back to the home bases, but the aircraft that did attack achieved good results. War industries in occupied territory were attacked this afternoon, when Bostons bombed several electrical power stations which serve factories in the Bethune area (south of Dieppe). The bombers flew unescorted, and after using cloud cover over the coast dived to tree-top height for their bombing run. One Boston crew reported that three of their four bombs had fallen in the centre of the objectives. Another Boston hit a switch house. The pilot saw smoke rising from the building afterwards. One aircraft went so low it had to hop twice over high-tension cables. Only one crew reported seeing German fighters, and these did not attack.
