EKETAHUNA

OBITUARY MRS M. E. COWLAM. (“Times-Age” Special.) The late Mrs M. E. Cowlam, who died recently in a private hospital at Pahiatua, was 86 years of age, having been born in England. She came to New Zealand with her parents, the late Mr and Mrs W. H. Herbert, arriving in Wellington in July, 1880. She was married in Wellington and lived there for several years before coming to the Bush district, where her father had taken up a. bush farm. She was very artistic. Her paintings, needle and wool work were greatly admired when they were on exhibition at Institutes and shows. She was the first secretary of St. Cuthbert’s Ladies’ Auxiliary, a foundation member and the first president of the Women's Institute, a foundation member of the Eketahuna Croquet Club and a member of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. The Rev J. C. W. Mutter conducted a funeral service in St. Cuthbert’s Anglican Church which was largely attended by relatives and friends. The chief mourners were her husband. Mrs K. Preston, Wellington, three brothers, Messrs H. Herbert, Hastings, A. H. Herbert, Eketahuna, L. T. Herbert, Pahiatua (brothers), T. Smith, Otaki, broth-er-in-law. The pallbearers were: Messrs T. Herbert, H. Herbert, T. Smith, C. Preston, W. N. Richardson and W. Dawson, representing the County Council. Messrs M. R. Herbert (Eketahuna) 'and W. Herbert (Nelson) were unable to be present. Among others, floral wreaths were received from the following: The chairman and councillors of the Eketahuna County Council, the staff of the Eketahuna County Council, members of the croquet club, members of the Eketahuna Women’s Institute, members of the Eketahuna branch of the Womens Division of the Farmers’ Union, president and members of the Eketahuna Club, and staff of A H. Herbert & Co. Personal Items. Mrs E, .Albretchsen, Hastwell Street, is the guest of her daughter, Mrs Martell, Miramar. Gunnei’ Harold Steer, of Papakura, is the guest of his parents, Mr and Mrs W. H. Steer, High Street. Miss Mavis Boustead, Nelson, is staying with her parents, Alfredton Road.
