GENERAL GIRAUD
WELCOMED IN WASHINGTON WILL CONFER WITH PRESIDENT. CONTROL OF FRENCH WEST INDIES. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.25 a.m.) RUGBY, July 7. General Giraud arrived in Washington this afternoon to confer with President Roosevelt. A salute of 17 guns was fired as the visitor's plane touched down at the'airfield. He was welcomed by a reception committee headed by Admiral Leahy, Chief of Staff to President Roosevelt. With General Giraud were three officers who had escaped from France in an Allied submarine last November. A member of General Giraud’s mission in Washington has been appointed to head the mission that will take over the French West Indies possessions, including Martinique, when the time, comes.
